Research interests
Juan Carlos’s research asks how firms, markets and institutions can serve the common good. It follows three strands:
- Multinational enterprises and social purpose: how social purpose can be identified and measured in multinationals, and how management education shapes responsible business practice.
- Data capitalism and AI governance: the ethical and policy challenges of platform business models, first developed as a Fellow of the Economy of Francesco Academy, and relational approaches to governing AI, the focus of his fellowship at the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences and the Angelicum.
- Innovation, competition and development: how local actors build innovation systems in emerging economies, the subject of his monograph Innovation Systems from Below (Palgrave Macmillan, 2026), and the role of competition policy in sustaining democratic market economies.
Much of this work is grounded in Latin America. Through the Data Research, Access and Governance Network (DRAGoN), he works with central banks and statistics offices across the region on data governance, and he has advised on these questions for the Inter-American Development Bank.
Please note that Juan Carlos is not accepting PhD students at the moment.
